Project Overview

The new Museum of London is set to open towards the end of 2026 in the heart of the historic City of London, creating a major new destination for learning, exploration and culture.

The redevelopment will transform the formerly derelict Victorian General Market building into a new museum space, housing permanent galleries and showcasing more of the museum’s collection than ever before.

The transformation has involved the careful restoration and adaptation of a complex existing structure, including the cleaning of 10,000 square metres of brickwork, roof reinforcement and the excavation of an extensive network of rediscovered vaults.

A live train line also runs alongside the subterranean gallery space, creating a unique connection between the museum and London’s transport heritage.

The Challenge

The project presented a highly complex commissioning environment, combining the challenges of an existing heritage frame with the installation of modern building services.

Adapting historic spaces to meet the technical requirements of a contemporary museum demanded careful coordination, structured testing and close management across multiple MEP systems.

With subterranean spaces, gallery environments, event spaces, modern infrastructure and operational constraints, ENVIRO’s role required strong technical oversight and clear control of commissioning activity throughout the project.

Objective

The Museum of London redevelopment is an exceptional project due to the nature of the existing building and its transformation into a modern public museum.

The project combines heritage restoration, complex structural adaptation and the integration of modern MEP services across a landmark cultural destination.

The presence of a live train line alongside the subterranean gallery space adds a further layer of complexity, creating a distinctive visitor experience while requiring careful coordination during delivery.

Results

ENVIRO has supported Phoenix ME through a complex MEP commissioning management process on one of London’s most significant cultural redevelopment projects.
